THE STORY.

Data Science running a record label?! That just sounds strange!
Well, not to us. The Data Artists has always been about the creative process of creating. 
Whether it's creating information from data or songs from musical notes. 

In 2018 we added a new branch to our activities at The Data Artists: The Data Artists Music. A record label where we use Data Science techniques to make and publish electronic music. Thats sound interesting, but how does that work in real life? Data Science and Music? Every day we are finding new applications where data science can give us insights in different facetes of the music industry. Whether it is song creating with Artificial Intelligence (AI), or finding optimal release schedules on all digital platforms like Spotify or Apple Music etc. With every release we are dedicated to use a suitable data science technique. 

Our catalog consists of digital and physical releases of (a) full albums and (b) extended plays (EP). Where, with global distribution contracts we are able to release music across the entire world - on all major platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and Beatport. Our physical releases (vinyl) are shipped from our office in Rotterdam. 

RELEASES.

Our first release was released late 2018. For the launch of the label, head honcho of The Data Artists - Ditty created a full length album  combining analog sounds with AI algorithms supported synthesisers.  The album is available digitally and on vinyl. 

After having released the album in 2018 and evaluating the results (plays and exposure) we felt the (data)urge to have a closer look at the distribution model. Hence, we asked our selves if full albums are still effective in todays age. Or from a more scientific research perspective Does carrier type (EP or Album) influence the amount of (a) exposure and (b) plays. Hence, after investigating Spotify data we found evidence for an optimal distribution model / release schedule. Based on this evidence we have shifted our multi-carrier strategy (digital and physical) to a digital strategy and we moved from releasing albums to single EP's with an interval of releasing music every two months in  2020.
