ICELAND'S REMARKABLE RECOVERY

CORONA - AN INTRODUCTION
by Ditty April 2016

ABSTRACT
This memo provides an evaluation of Iceland’s current economic climate and (briefly) places into the context of the financial crisis of 2008. Iceland’s current economic outlook is (relatively) positive. Important macroeconomic metrics evaluating the overall health of an economy such as GDP, Government spendings, Consumer confidence, Employment rates etc. show positive signs of economic recovery and growth. However, from a political perspective Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson is currently facing a no confidence vote in Parliament linked to undisclosed offshore accounts. Perhaps, causing some instability or stagnation in growth. The second part of the memo focuses on the most important challenges and prospects of the economy. Based on the remarkable recovery Iceland has gone through, this memo argues that focusing on traditional production functions of the economy (such as fishing industry, energy resources and tourism) will contribute to / provide sustainable economic growth for Iceland. In the final section of this memo some examples of policies presented that will facilitate sustainable economic growth.
